TAKE BACK DEMOCRACY PLEDGE (TBD)

Candidates and elected officials who take this pledge promise constituents that they will work in a bipartisan manner to protect and strengthen our democratic system, including with respect to the areas specifically identified below.  Citizens have the right to choose their elected representatives.  Elected officials have a duty to serve their constituents – not the wealthy or special interests – and to prevent government from rigging the system to influence who gets elected.  The loyalty of elected officials belongs to the Nation, not to any political party.

  • Ban Stock Trading and Self-dealing.  Prohibit elected officials and their families and close associates from using non-public government information gained through public service for personal gain. This includes through stock trading, prediction markets, and influence peddling.  Impose financial penalties for corruption and processes for removal from office.
  • Require Financial Disclosure.  Require elected officials to make their tax returns and other relevant financial information public so voters can evaluate potential conflicts of interest and compliance with restrictions on financial activity.
  • Close Lobbying Loopholes. Prevent former elected officials from becoming lobbyists for a reasonable period after leaving office.  Restrict other forms of influence-peddling during that period.
  • Set Term Limits and Eliminate Immunity. Establish reasonable limits on the number of terms elected officials may serve.  Eliminate absolute immunity from prosecution for any elected official.
  • Ensure Officials Are Fit to Serve. Require elected officials to disclose serious physical or cognitive health conditions that could affect their ability to do their official duties. Officials who can no longer perform their duties representing constituents should step down. Constituents are entitled to full and competent representation.
  • Limit Big Money in Politics. Ban corporate money from your campaign.  Support laws and Constitutional amendments that set reasonable limits on political spending, distinguishing individuals and corporations, and require campaigns to disclose the names of all donors. Reforms in campaign finance laws must protect freedom of the press.
  • Protect Voting Rights.  Pass sweeping voting protections to ensure voting is safe and secure and that it is easy for every eligible US citizen to vote. This includes secure mail-in voting, ballot drop boxes, and enough convenient polling places and hours.
  • End Gerrymandering. Require independent, non-partisan commissions to draw congressional voting districts.  Districts should normally be redrawn every 10 years after the Census. Changes at other times should be rare and follow clear, non-partisan rules.
  • Ensure Federal Judicial Independence. Impose term limits and require strict and enforceable ethical standards (including limiting gifts received and investing while on the Court).
  • Stop Political Disinformation. Require social media platforms to clearly identify sponsored political content and stop coordinated false information operations and political bots.  Apply stronger rules during the two weeks before primaries and elections.  Outside election periods, restrict algorithms designed to promote political division. Impose penalties for dissemination of false information consistent with libel and slander laws.
